Day 2 – Florence

After breakfast, meet your private guide in the hotel lobby and begin your half-day walking tour of Florence. Start by admiring the beauty of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as the Duomo, famous for its magnificent dome. Designed by Cambio in 1296, it was the renowned Renaissance architect Brunelleschi who completed it with the stunning dome. Next, see the adjacent 14th-century Gothic Campanile, or bell tower, designed by Giotto, and the Baptistry in Romanesque style, featuring Ghiberti’s Bronze Doors that depict scenes from the life of Christ.

Continue to Piazza della Signoria to visit Palazzo Vecchio and the beautiful 14th-century Gothic Loggia dei Lanzi. In the Piazza, admire the Fountain of Neptune by Ammannati and a replica of Michelangelo’s David. Afterward, visit the Accademia Museum with your private guide to see Michelangelo’s original David statue. Your tour concludes in the city center, where your guide can provide recommendations for lunch.

Please note: This tour ends in the city center. Transfer back to the hotel is not included. This tour involves walking on uneven surfaces and cobblestones.

Day 4 – Florence to Tuscan Countryside

Following breakfast and hotel check-out, meet your driver in the hotel lobby and board your private vehicle. Your first stop will be San Gimignano, also known as “San Gimignano dalle belle torri” for its numerous noble towers. These towers are believed to have been built for defensive purposes and to signify the power of the noble families involved in the internecine conflicts between the Ghibellines and the Guelphs. After a guided walking tour, enjoy lunch at a local farmhouse.

Next, take a 30-minute drive through a region blessed with lush vineyards, olive groves, and cypress trees, before arriving in Siena, a prominent city within the Tuscan region with a centuries-old rivalry with Florence. Enjoy a guided tour of the medieval city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the beautiful Palazzo del Campo, famous for its semiannual horse race and the Siena Cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Finally, transfer to your hotel in Tuscany for your three-night stay.

Please note: This tour involves walking on uneven surfaces and cobblestones.

Day 5 – Tuscan Countryside

Following breakfast at the hotel, depart to explore the cradle of the best wines. Start with Pienza, a rare example of Renaissance town design. Often described as the “ideal city” or the “utopian city,” it represents one of the best-planned Renaissance towns, embodying a model of ideal living and governance aimed at satisfying the needs of a peaceful and hardworking population. Pienza’s location in the center of Val d’Orcia, a beautiful and untouched valley included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, epitomizes the humanistic architectural principle of a balanced relationship between man and nature. The town owes its beauty and fame to Pope Pius II, who transformed the ancient Castello di Corsignano into a Papal residence in the Renaissance style and renamed it Pienza.

Next, visit a local farm to enjoy a delightful picnic with genuine Tuscan products. Here, you will have the opportunity to taste various cheeses and local cured meats accompanied by craft beers. Continue to Montepulciano for a sensorial wine experience at a niche winery, located in the heart of Tuscany. This magical vineyard, featuring no less than five different soil types—stony, coppery, sulfurous, clay, and sandy—produces natural, indigo, and biodynamic wines. Visit the vineyards and the cellars, where you will taste the wine directly from the barrels. Transfer back to your hotel at the end of the tour.

Please note: This tour involves walking on uneven surfaces and cobblestones.

Day 6 – Tuscan Countryside

Start the day with a visit to the hilltop town of Volterra, a former Etruscan settlement with a splendid view of the surrounding landscape. Besides the views, the city is also renowned for its alabaster, a beautiful pale stone that is soft enough to carve. Your guide will provide a tour of the most important sights of the town, then take you to visit an artist at his alabaster workshop. You will then enjoy some free time in the village to stroll along the medieval alleyways and have lunch on your own.

Enjoy some free time for shopping before heading to a real oil mill nestled in the green hills of Tuscany. Immerse yourself in a sensory journey into the world of olive oil as you discover the history and process of extra virgin olive oil production, from past to present and future. You will have the opportunity to tour the production sites, interact with the millers, and observe the phases of production, culminating in an olive oil tasting accompanied by local products (light meal/snacks). Transfer back to your hotel at the end of the tour.

Day 7 – Tuscan Countryside to Civitavecchia

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to the Florence airport for your flight home, or to the cruise port for your cruise.

Physical Activity

This Journey should be considered active and includes a considerable amount of walking. The land portion of the trip should be considered active and includes a considerable amount of walking. Small towns and villages in Tuscany often do not have coach drop-off points in the center of town, so a short walk is required to get from the coach to the center of the village.

Enrichment Journeys will do everything in our power to ensure comfort through our third-party providers, including air-conditioned buses and comfortable accommodations where applicable. However, some areas cannot be accessed by coach, so our drivers will get you as close to sites as is legally allowed. Sensible, rubber-soled walking shoes are strongly recommended. Historical sites often do not have elevators, escalators, or ramps due to the age of the building/structure. Steps can be steep and uneven. Based on crowds and traffic, order of visits may be changed. You may have to walk a moderate distance to transfer to coach stations and airport terminals. Time spent on the road and traveling can be long, so you will need to be prepared for stretches of down time in between destinations.

Wheelchair access at many sites is limited. A fold-up wheelchair may be able to be stored on the bus but requires prior arrangements. Guests must be able to transfer from their chair to the transportation. Guides/drivers are not allowed to lift or push wheelchairs, so guests requiring physical assistance must travel with a companion who can assist. Motorized wheelchairs and scooters cannot be accommodated on this group program.

Airfare

International airfare is not included in the land quote. If you would like a separate quote for international airfare, please indicate that in your request.

Enrichment Journeys is committed to providing remarkable experiences at extraordinary value. As a result, airlines and routes are selected to maximize that value and may involve multiple stops and extended layovers versus non-stop or direct flights. Passengers wishing to utilize specific carriers, direct/non-stop flights, Business Class upgrades, or to extend their time in any of our beginning or ending destination cities may do so by contacting Enrichment Journeys and inquiring about the Custom Airfare Program. There is a $100 per person charge for this service, however this charge will be applied toward any flights or upgrades you choose to purchase. The $100 charge must be paid prior to receiving a custom air quote.

Passport and Visa Requirements

To travel internationally, you must have a passport in good condition, and it must be valid for at least 6 months after the last day of your trip. Visa requirements change frequently and for various reasons. As a result, our Personal Vacation Managers are not always able to provide visa information. The best way to obtain up-to-date information regarding visa requirements is to visit the official US government website for Americans traveling abroad, Travel.State.Gov (Canadian citizens should visit https://travel.gc.ca/, for all other countries please visit your government website or local embassy), which details specific information on the countries you would like to visit, including visa requirements. You may also use a third-party visa service, such as Expedited Travel. These services require an additional service fee but make the process of applying for a visa much simpler.

Customizing Your Journey

Guests who wish to make alterations to the itinerary may do so for a nominal fee.

To extend a hotel stay at the beginning or end of your Journey, please speak to a Personal Vacation Manager for assistance in making those arrangements.
