Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Arrive Porto

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be transferred to the hotel. After check-in, you’ll have time to get settled in before joining your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner.

Day 2 – Porto

Today we will discover Porto, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled along the picturesque Douro River, Porto features a rich history, stunning architecture and the production of world-renowned port wine. The cityscape is a delightful mix of old and new, with contemporary architecture blending seamlessly with historic landmarks. After visiting some of the highlights of the city, we will experience the winemaking tradition of Porto by visiting a traditional Port Wine Cellar for a tour and tasting. Learn about the region’s rich history and commitment to traditional winemaking methods during a tour of the cellars, then taste for yourself the exceptional quality of various port varieties at a tasting. We will then head to a different Port Wine Cellar for a delicious lunch in their main dining room, situated in the heart of a magnificent 19th-century wine cellar and surrounded by 3,200 oak barrels where the fine port wines are aged.

Day 3 – Porto

After breakfast, we will venture outside of the city and enjoy panoramic views of Porto and the Douro River as we head into the heart of the Vinho Verde (“Green Wine”) Wine Region. We will then visit a winery for a tour and tasting of the exceptional white wine that is unique to this region of Portugal. Passed down through five generations, this family-owned estate recently celebrated its 150-year anniversary. Tucked between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Geres mountains to the east, this winery is situated in one of the most famous wine regions of Portugal. After a tour and tasting, return to your hotel where you’ll enjoy the afternoon at your leisure in Porto.

Day 4 – Porto to Lisbon

This morning, we will check out of the hotel and transfer to Lisbon with an enroute stop in Coimbra, the “City of Students.” Coimbra University is one of the oldest in Europe, earning its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will visit the university, including the Capela de Sao Miguel with an imposing Baroque organ and Joanina Library, which has more than 300,000 works dating from the 16th-18th centuries arranged on beautiful shelves decorated with gilded carvings. Enjoy some free time to admire the architecture, stroll through the town and have lunch before continuing to Lisbon. Upon arrival, check in to the hotel and get settled in. This evening, we will enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal in the heart of the city. While dining, enjoy the ambiance of the cozy restaurant while professional Fado singers showcase their unique style of music. Fado is on UNESCO’s list of World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Day 5 – Lisbon

Lisbon is the oldest city in Western Europe, predating Rome by about 400 years. Historians believe that it was settled by the Phoenicians around 1200 B.C. From its historic tradition as a maritime center to its modern-day culture and art, Lisbon is a lively city full of passion and history. This morning, we will learn about Lisbon and Portuguese culture as we tour the downtown neighborhoods. Around each corner is a postcard scene of fountains, arches, tile panels and beautiful river views. We will make our way from Commercial Square to the Alfama District, where we’ll wander through narrow, winding streets of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood. From there, we will explore some of the main squares, visit the Lisbon Cathedral, and end our tour at one of the city’s many vista points. Enjoy free time this afternoon to explore Lisbon.

Day 6 – Lisbon

Today we will visit the neighborhood of Belem. Here, you will see the monument to the Portuguese explorers during the Age of Discovery and make a photo stop at the Belem Tower, built in the early 1500s and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will then visit the Jeronimos Monastery, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The current building replaced a smaller church on the same site, as its location allowed the monks to aid seafarers from the nearby harbor. This prominent example of Manueline (Portuguese late Gothic) style architecture is the final resting place of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. Return to Lisbon where you will have the afternoon at your leisure.

Day 7 – Lisbon Embarkation

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to the port, where you will board the Azamara Onward.

Days 8-19 – Cruising onboard the Azamara Onward

Cruise for 13 nights to Miami onboard Azamara Onward visiting Casablanca.

More Information

What to Know Before You Go

Physical Activity

The land portion of the trip should be considered active and includes a considerable amount of walking. In Portugal, Lisbon is similar to San Francisco in that there are many steep roads and walkways that may transform a short walk into a strenuous one.

Enrichment Journeys will do everything in our power to ensure comfort through our third-party providers, including air-conditioned buses and comfortable accommodations where applicable. However, some areas cannot be accessed by coach, so our drivers will get you as close to sites as is legally allowed. Sensible, rubber-soled walking shoes are strongly recommended. Historical sites often do not have elevators, escalators, or ramps due to the age of the building/structure. Steps can be steep and uneven. Based on crowds and traffic, order of visits may be changed. You may have to walk a moderate distance to transfer to coach stations and airport terminals. Time spent on the road and traveling can be long, so you will need to be prepared for stretches of down time in between destinations.

Wheelchair access at many sites is limited. A fold-up wheelchair may be able to be stored on the bus but requires prior arrangements. Guests must be able to transfer from their chair to the transportation. Guides/drivers are not allowed to lift or push wheelchairs, so guests requiring physical assistance must travel with a companion who can assist. Motorized wheelchairs and scooters cannot be accommodated on this group program.

Airfare

Included airfare is from select airports only. To inquire about a different airport, please contact your Personal Vacation Manager.

Enrichment Journeys is committed to providing remarkable experiences at extraordinary value. As a result, airlines and routes are selected to maximize that value and may involve multiple stops and extended layovers versus non-stop or direct flights. Passengers wishing to utilize specific carriers, direct/non-stop flights, Business Class upgrades, or to extend their time in any of our beginning or ending destination cities may do so by contacting Enrichment Journeys and inquiring about the Custom Airfare Program. There is a $100 per person charge for this service, however this charge will be applied toward any flights or upgrades you choose to purchase. The $100 charge must be paid prior to receiving a custom air quote.

Passport and Visa Requirements

To travel internationally, you must have a passport in good condition, and it must be valid for at least 6 months after the last day of your trip. Visa requirements change frequently and for various reasons. As a result, our Personal Vacation Managers are not always able to provide visa information. The best way to obtain up-to-date information regarding visa requirements is to visit the official US government website for Americans traveling abroad, Travel.State.Gov (Canadian citizens should visit https://travel.gc.ca/, for all other countries please visit your government website or local embassy), which details specific information on the countries you would like to visit, including visa requirements. You may also use a third-party visa service, such as Expedited Travel. These services require an additional service fee but make the process of applying for a visa much simpler.

Customizing Your Journey

To extend a hotel stay at the beginning or end of your Journey, please speak to a Personal Vacation Manager for assistance in making those arrangements.

If you are interested in customizing your Journey, pairing it with a different cruise, or arranging a private tour for your party, you may be interested in our Private Journeys program. You can learn more about this program here, or speak to a Personal Vacation Manager for more information.
